Project: A $5 million showcase robotics lab that brings automation to laboratory testing, reducing costs and result time.
Robotics are usually thought of in connection with high-tech manufacturing and NASA missions. Now, they have entered the field of modern medicine with the introduction of total laboratory automation to clinical laboratory testing. Having built three previous robo labs, Candor Construction Group was the natural choice to manage the construction when North Shore-LIJ decided to install a new lab.
Candor Construction Group began the project by working with the owner, Karlsberger Architects, and Atkinson Koven Feinberg Engineers to prioritize goals and develop a preferred plan. In the pre-planning phase, building conditions and special requirements were identified. The team decided to locate the lab in gutted office space on the second floor, above a first floor Chase Manhattan Bank automated high speed mail facility which operates 24 hours a day. Construction activities were permitted only during nighttime hours, and the dust could not be created.
The space is fitted with a new HVAC system, a 1000 KW emergency generator, automated Remstar refrigerator, a 125 KVA UPS system, 12 de ionized water lines and drains.
North Shore's robo lab, built and ready to go in just under seven months, is a showcase facility that meets all of the owner's aesthetic and operational requirements.
| "The robotics equipment integral to the laboratory function depends on 'super-flat' floors and carefully controlled temperature and humidity. The quality construction provided the precise environment necessary for the proper functioning of this high-tech operation" |
