Saint Clare's Hospital

Linear Accelerator

Architect: Jeffrey Berman Architects

Saint Clare's Hospital designated a small 1200 square foot area adjacent to their existing linear accelerator to house a new Varian unit and treatment center. The area required extensive renovation work before the new Varian unit could be set in place.

The concrete floor had to be excavated and new underground electrical piping installed and tied into a new power conditioner. Special reinforcing was required for the floor to support the 21,000 pound procedure room door. Bunker type construction included the erection of 20” deep shielded masonry walls.

Because the construction was located adjacent to a functioning Linac procedure area, all work had to be performed at night or on weekends so as not to disrupt patient treatment. All work was executed in accordance with strict infectious control procedures.

The completed space included the treatment room, an exam room, a control room and a conference room.
